Southern Alabama Insulators
by Larry Richards

Reprinted from "INSULATORS - Crown Jewels of the Wire", November 1975, page 20

I thought Alan Rodgers' article and list on Florida insulators in the September issue was quite interesting.

For a long time I have wanted to compile a list of the better type insulators from around my area, so thought this would be a good time to give it a try.

I am including insulators from only the southern part of the state, as I have not heard enough about what has been found in the central and northern parts, and would rather wait until I can get some more information. I hope to revise the list later to include the whole state. And I would be glad to hear from any collectors in Alabama who might have something to contribute to the list. (Write to me at: 1367 Goodman Ave., Mobile, AL 36605.)

To me this has always been an interesting aspect of collecting, to try to determine just what kinds of insulators were used in an area years ago. It was surprising to learn of some of the rare types that were used here, especially in the Mobile area. But actually there are not too many collectors around as compared to other places. Yet there is enough knowledge of what insulators are and of their value, to make finding even the more common ones fairly difficult now.
